Program Description

Technology-based businesses remain the core driver for economic growth in Massachusetts. Forging, structuring, and managing alliances between businesses, government policymakers and academia is a key step in helping Massachusetts companies become more globally competitive.

During this important North Shore Technology Council business breakfast, speakers and panelists will discuss the importance of alliances and their impact on economic growth.

Massachusetts State Senator Bruce Tarr, who represents First Essex and Middlesex, will discuss his perspective on economic development and how to keep the state competitive. Representatives from the Massachusetts Office of Economic Development will focus on the importance of technology industries on the state's growth and mechanisms to enhance coordination between stakeholders.

Dr. Srinivasa Rangan, from Babson College, will discuss his work with fellow researcher Nara Narahari on the value of alliance formation. The emphasis will be on emerging technology sectors, such as nanotechnology. Massachusetts can obtain benefits from extending this approach to other technologies where experience is fragmented, knowledge is disbursed and facilities are distributed across regions.

Executives in established technology industries will contribute their insights on the benefits of alliance strategies along with barriers and challenges from their real-world experience. An interactive panel comprised of additional industry members and economic developers will comment on alliances following the presentations.
