Full Title: Are You Putting Me On? The Impact of Wearable Medical Sensors on Health Care Delivery

Description

Presentation:

Wearable devices that track calories burned, measure physiological values such as heart rate, and monitor sleep have become prevalent among the fitness-minded general public, but how will wearable technology advance the way disease is diagnosed and specialized health care is delivered?

Joseph T. Gwin, PhD, Vice President of Research and Development at BioSensics of Cambridge, MA, will discuss the medical technology wearables market – including current and future capabilities and opportunities, as well as applications such as diagnostics and assistive care – at the North Shore Technology Council Biosciences First Friday luncheon seminar.

Joseph T. Gwin, PhD, Vice President of Research and Development, BioSensics LLC

Dr. Gwin is an expert in biomechanics, biosignal processing, and wearable sensors. At BioSensics he oversees a portfolio of National Institutes of Health funded research and technology development projects on wearable sensor based telehealth systems for stroke survivors, wheelchair users, frail older adults, and others. Wearable sensor medical technologies commercialized by BioSensics under Dr. Gwin’s leadership include systems for point-of-care gait, balance, and fall risk assessment; a medical alert pendant with fall detection and activity monitoring; and a physical activity monitor that is targeted for research and used in pharmaceutical clinical trials and other comparative outcomes clinical research. Prior to joining BioSensics, Dr. Gwin published widely cited works on novel signal processing techniques that enabled, for the first time, successful recording of electroencephalography (EEG) during walking and running, and worked on a real-time in-helmet accelerometry-based head impact monitor, which was successfully commercialize by Riddell as the Sideline Response Syste
